Talking With Your Doctor
The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be very difficult to pin down. Most women diagnosed with ovarian cancer report that it took a long time and several visits to a physician before the diagnosis was made. [2] Cancer whispers, so listen carefully! Catching ovarian cancer in the early stages is your best chance for a cure. [2]

No matter how many times you have had a gynecological examination, it can still feel embarrassing and uncomfortable. Share your feelings with your physician, and he/she will make every effort to help you through the experience. A nurse should be in the room for the examination and, if you like, a family member or friend can accompany you.

The nurse working with your physician will be one of your best resources. She or he usually has a great deal of experience. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek advice. The nurse can act as an excellent link between you and your physician.

It is common to feel intimidated when it comes to speaking with your physician. Feeling anxiety prior to an appointment is perfectly normal. Write down your questions ahead of time while you’re more relaxed. You may find it helpful to print out and use this sample list of questions.

Be assertive! Remember: you are your own best advocate. To help remember what the doctor says, take notes or bring along a tape recorder. Don’t feel like you are taking up time or asking stupid questions. This is your appointment and your personal time with your physician.

Remember: you are your own best advocate
